Though I find Ayn Rand a little preachy Taylor Caldwell had more nuance. She really put you in the story, wheareas Ayn Rand had a specific message. Ms. Caldwell had more nuance. I think she had more respect for her characters, which makes reading her books so much more interesting.

I first discovered TC's books in 1978 and have constantly been impressed by the accuracy of her analyses of human nature. Perhaps her observations are not appreciated until one has observed and/ or experienced these aspects for oneself. She denounces (e.g. through the words of Jonathan Ferrier in 'Testimony of Two men') the evil aspects of mankind as if we all know this, but most people go through life unable or unwilling to acknowledge them. Such admissions would make them uncomfortable. C.S. Lewis said "We read to know that we are not alone" therefore TC's books though disturbing in their revelations are also comforting.
